Let me take you back to that remarkable day when King Solomon’s wisdom was tested in the most extraordinary way.

It was a sweltering morning in Jerusalem, the sun already beating down on the stone courtyards of the palace. Two women, both disheveled and desperate, were brought before King Solomon, their faces streaked with tears and dust. They stood before his magnificent throne - Solomon, though young, already renowned for his God-given wisdom, sat there with an aura of authority that commanded respect despite his youth.

The first woman, her voice trembling with emotion, began her story. “My lord,” she said, bowing low, “this woman and I live in the same house. I gave birth to a son three days ago, and she also gave birth to a son, but hers was born dead. During the night while I was asleep, she switched her dead child with my living one.”

The second woman immediately protested, “No! That’s not true! The living child is mine, and the dead one is hers!”

The first woman wept openly now. “She lies, my king! My baby is alive, hers is dead!”

The courtroom fell silent as these accusations hung in the air. The guards looked uncomfortable, shifting their weight from foot to foot. The other court officials whispered among themselves. How could anyone determine which woman spoke truth? There were no witnesses to this night exchange.

Solomon listened intently, his expression unreadable. He didn’t rush to judgment but instead considered both women carefully. After what seemed like an eternity, he finally spoke, his voice calm yet firm.

“Bring me a sword,” he commanded.

A guard quickly produced a gleaming sword, which he presented to the king. The crowd gasped - what could Solomon possibly intend to do with such a weapon in this dispute?

Solomon took the sword and held it aloft. “Since both of you claim this living child,” he announced, “I shall render a just decision. Cut the living child in two and give half to one woman and half to the other.”

The courtroom erupted in shock. The first woman - the true mother - fell to her knees, her face contorted in horror. “No, my lord! Don’t kill the baby!” she cried out desperately. “Give him to her! Just let him live!”

But the second woman, whose face had hardened, sneered and said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!”

And in that moment, Solomon’s wisdom became crystal clear. He pointed his sword toward the true mother. “Give the living child to her,” he declared. “Do not kill him. She is his mother.”

The entire court broke into applause, marveling at Solomon’s divine wisdom. He hadn’t needed witnesses or physical evidence - he had understood the very nature of a mother’s love, which would rather sacrifice her own claim than see her child harmed.

As the baby was restored to his rightful mother’s arms, Solomon’s reputation for extraordinary wisdom spread throughout Israel and beyond. People marveled at how the God of Israel had granted their young king such profound insight into the human heart.

The true mother clutched her child to her breast, weeping with gratitude, while the false woman was led away in disgrace. The courtyard slowly emptied, but the memory of that day - how a king’s wisdom had been proven through a mother’s sacrificial love - would be told and retold for generations to come.

And this, my loves, is where our journey begins.
