I used to sit near a tree when I was lost in thought, when I was tired, when I had cried so much that all I had left was the energy to sit, to watch, to breathe. I would stare at it for a long time, quietly, as if listening. And people might ask why — why a tree, why the stillness, why the silence.

Have you ever noticed that a tree does not know when its branches form above, but it knows when its roots must grow deeper?
Have you ever wondered why growth below always comes before expansion above?
Have you ever asked what pressure teaches us that comfort never could?

The tree never rushed to become visible. It never strained to be impressive. It responded only to what was necessary to remain standing. When the wind pulled, the roots reached. When the ground hardened, they adapted. Long before anything beautiful appeared above the surface, the work was already happening where no one was looking.

I think this is what many of us learn the hard way.

We are told that strength is loud, that survival requires sharp edges, that softness is a liability. We are taught to value what can be seen — the branches, the reach, the image of success — while dismissing the unseen labor that makes any of it possible. And when people endure hardship quietly, when they choose patience over reaction, depth over display, they are often misunderstood as passive or weak.

But stillness is not surrender.
Silence is not emptiness.
Gentleness is not the absence of power.

Like the tree, many people learn depth before expression. They learn grounding before growth. They learn how to stay long before they learn how to reach. Their compassion is not ignorance — it is earned. Their restraint is not fear — it is understanding.

I stared at the tree because it did not perform resilience. It embodied it.

It did not demand that the storm stop. It did not argue with the wind. It did not abandon itself to survive. It simply adjusted, deepened, and remained. And in doing so, it offered something rare: presence without pressure.

This is what I fear we are losing in the world.

We live in a time that rewards reaction over reflection, control over trust, speed over wisdom. We ask people to grow quickly while denying them the space to root deeply. We praise visible strength while ignoring the quiet endurance that sustains families, communities, and societies through long seasons of pain.

What happens when we force growth before grounding?
What happens when we demand obedience instead of trust?
What happens when we measure worth by what rises above the surface and ignore what keeps everything from collapsing?

The answer is instability.

A tree with shallow roots cannot withstand the storm, no matter how tall it appears. And a society that values control over consent, appearance over integrity, will fracture under pressure — not because its people are weak, but because they were never allowed to root.

That tree taught me that true strength does not announce itself. It prepares. It listens. It adapts without abandoning its nature. It does not fear depth, because it knows depth is what makes growth possible.

And maybe that is what we are being asked to remember — as individuals, as leaders, as a world aching beneath its masks.

Before we reach higher, we must learn to root deeper.
Before we command movement, we must allow stillness.
Before we demand strength, we must honor what it costs to remain human.

The tree never tried to be more than it was.
It simply refused to stop being itself.

And sometimes, that is the bravest thing of all.
