The Voice We Find While Looking for Something Else
I wonder how many people have spent years trying to discover who they are without noticing the ways they already reveal themselves.
Not through grand declarations or carefully constructed descriptions, but through smaller things.
The questions they cannot seem to leave alone.
The subjects they return to when nobody is asking them to.
The details they notice that everyone else walks past.
Perhaps a voice is not something we manufacture. Perhaps it is something we gradually recognize.
I have been thinking about the difference between being given a subject and choosing one.
When a subject is assigned, the immediate task is relatively clear. There is something to examine, a direction to follow, and usually an expectation about what a useful response should contain.
But when the choice is open, something changes.
